Case study AT&T Business · Device configuration

Device page fixes, still live on AT&T Business. Colour swatches and a device gallery, designed in 2023 and running today.

Research on AT&T Business’s buy flow flagged the device configuration page. Colour swatches disappeared against the white background, and a device could only show one image. I owned both fixes as the sole designer, handed them to development, and they are on the page today.

01 · The ask

Some colours got lost on white.

The request was plain: “Investigate if there is a way to make the color swatches easier to see. Some colors get lost in the background easily.”

I drew three options. The one I liked least on looks won: a ring around every swatch, and an inner shadow so the palest finishes still read as objects rather than gaps.

The swatch row, cycling. Switch between the old treatment and the new one.
02 · Colour vision

Checked against eight kinds of colour vision.

A ring is only worth adding if it survives the conditions that made the swatches hard to see in the first place.

I ran the old and new rows through eight simulations, from tritanopia to full achromatopsia. In the old row the pale finishes vanish into the card. In the new one every swatch keeps an edge.

03 · More than one image

One photo per device was not enough.

The second ask: “Support the ability for a device to have more than one device image.” The page could only ever show one.

I specified a gallery: a thumbnail strip under the device, and an expanded view for people who want to look closely. Both were drawn for desktop, tablet and mobile, with every scroll state.

04 · Today

Three years on, both are still there.

Open a device on the AT&T Business site and the swatches carry rings, the strip holds seven images, and the expanded view opens over the page.

The details moved on without me, which is the point. The arrows now page the thumbnails instead of the hero, and the expanded view counts with dots instead of thumbnails. The structure is the one I handed over.
